Melt-blown fabric is the main filter materials in face masks, maybe some people worry the materials is safe or not, let’s delve into the raw materials of melt-blown fabric and see know about more about its application.
What is Meltblown Fabric?
Unlike woven materials, melt-blown fabric is the one of non-woven fabric, the raw materials is polypropylene granules , melt and extrude into very fine fibers, then lay down in a web structure. These fibers are incredibly thin, the diameters is around 2~5 microns, so that can fit to stop viruses, bacteria and dust go into respiratory system.
Safety in Manufactured Masks
Meltblown nonwoven fabric is considered to be a safe material, it is in the middle layer of mask, it won’t make you hard to breathe when you wear it. Like the plain face mask, N95 mask and fold mask we wear in daily day, the middle layer is different grade melt-blown non-woven fabric, usually it can reach 95% ~ 99% filter efficiency.
Cautions During DIY Projects
Although finished masks is very safe, but raw material melt-blown fabric during DIY is not 100% safe, because the fibers is loose, if you only use the melt-blown alone, you need to wear mask to avoid the micro fibers fly into your nose and month.
The Takeaway
Melt-blown fabric is a very safe and effective filtration materials used in masks, can be safety use.
